5. Slow loading: NETWORK VERSIONS The program loads and/or runs very slowly across a wireless or old network A) Contact us for advice about installing certain files locally onto each computer to prevent network overload. This is only possible for versions Numbershark 3.04 and Wordshark 3.04 and later. B) This can occur if your network installation has become corrupted. To check this, ensure that no-one is using the program, then examine your “shared” directory for the program: If 2 users have signed on using the same user ID they may have caused a corruption. User .sha files are normally small (under 50k) unless they have recorded sound for a substantial number of words. If you find the shared directory contains any HS_Err_PID files or .sht files or large files (over 100kb) contact Support for advice. C) Unusual in schools, who are normally aware of anti-virus issues, but check B) below. 5. Slow loading: CD VERSIONS: The program loads, but takes a long time to do so. Once loaded, it is fine. A) This can be a sign of disk damage: The CD drive is struggling to read the disk. B) If the program takes a very long time (typically between 2 and 20 minutes), this is usually because you have switched your anti-virus program on to “Scan on Access” or similar very high level activity. The anti-virus program is scanning every file on our CD before allowing it to load. The files on the CD are “read only”, so cannot alter on their own, or be altered by viruses. Thus, there is no benefit in repeatedly checking them. Depending on your anti-virus program you have several choices: 1. Put up with this wait as a cost of being “ultra cautious”, as your anti-virus program will diligently check your files every time you use the program. 2. Turn down your anti-virus scanning to a less extreme setting, at least whilst using our program 3. Tell your anti-virus program that it does not have to check our disk every time 4. Turn down /disable your anti-virus program whilst running our program. We would advise you disconnect from the internet whilst the anti-virus program is turned down or disabled. 5. Do check that you have only one anti-virus program running. We do find customers with two or even three running concurrently. This huge burden on the computer’s disk and processor almost guarantees slow loading and running of any program, includingour own. 6. Other possibilities are listed on our anti-virus page.
