“We have a single-user CD version, which we take from one machine to the next as required. We currently store the student data on each of the local machines, but they have now been networked. We would like to store the student data on the server instead, as this will make backing up the data easier.”
This can work if you have just one single-user CD of either program. This should not be attempted if you have more than one CD, as this would give rise to potential file-sharing violations, data loss and corruptions.

If wishing to purchase more licences, the network version is designed for this situation and should be considered.

CDs of different vintages are not normally interchangeable.

1. Find the data folder on each machine, and make a back-up of the contents.
Wordshark data folder is "shark-shared" or for more recent versions "wordshark-shared".
Numbershark data folder is "nshark-shared" or "numbershark-shared"
These may most easily be found by carrying out a "search" for "*.sha"
2. Uninstall.
3. Manually delete the -shared directory from each client machine.
4. Make a similarly-named folder on your server, and share it across the network. It will need read/write/modify permissions for all users. We suggest you make it a “hidden folder” after testing.
5. Reinstall. Mid way through installing, choose the server-based new directory/location for student data.
6. On completion of the install, copy the contents of the old folder into the newly created one. Note that files with the same name from different computers will over-write each other, so backup, and copy over just the largest (or) most recent of these.
7. Test the new installation.
