FAQ 9: The computer does not have a usable CD or DVD drive.

Q9. Our new laptop computer does not have a CD or DVD drive. Can we buy a single user CD to run on this by copying it onto our server or our virtual CD stack, to run across the network?

No.  A single user CD may not be copied, and may not be installed onto a server or virtual CD stack.  Under the terms of our licence, the CD must be in a local drive.

However, this local drive can be an external CD or DVD drive (e.g. Plugged into a USB port) (PC users - you will need to be running XP service pack 2 or Vista, as earlier PC operating systems have some difficulty running from such external drives)

This restriction is in place so that we can offer a more generous licence than most “single user” licences which allow use on just one computer: You ARE allowed to install our CD onto several machines, with whichever one that has the CD in the local drive being allowed to run. Please contact Support if this restriction is a problem to you: We are considering alternative licence arrangements should we find a sufficient demand.

Special note for schools and other networked organisations:

Some school computer systems have been locked down by the school or its technical contractor or management system so that the CD drives may not be used for any CD containing an  executable program. We advise teachers considering buying the single user version for school use check with their school network manager or technician before purchase.  The network versions of Wordshark and Numbershark are designed for use in schools and other organisations where such restrictions are in force.
