Hints on using Wordshark and Numbershark
Wordshark and Numbershark are very large programs, and are designed to meet the needs of a wide age and ability range of learners with many preferred learning styles.
We do advise that you read the manuals, and contact us if these do not help your specific needs. Additional manuals may be purchased from Sales, tel (UK) 0208 748 5927, and “Home user” guides for parents are also available from that number (for Wordshark only)
See “Training” tab if you are interested in in-service training for your school.
Interactive white-boards and touch screens Student records Numbershark Wordshark
Interactive white-boards & touch screens
Both programs from release 3.05 work well with these: We are accredited for use with the major interactive white-board suppliers, and as far as we are aware work well with all other interactive white-boards.
E.g. Wordsearch: Use the “screen blind” or “shutter” facility to cover the wordsearch (but not the wordlist), and then reveal it half a line at a time. This focuses the eyes on a single line, but also allows learners to think about ascenders.
Student Records will only be stored if you have first logged a student on as a user. Sign in as a program administrator, go to “Admin” “Add and manage”, and click on “Add student”.
If the student has already been registered by another administrator (and some schools now sign every child in “in bulk”) do as above, but click on “Capture existing student”, then click on the student’s name in the right hand white box. Thereafter, students may view their own records by going to “Settings for [themselves]”/View games played. Administrators access all student records by signing in as an administrator, going to “Admin /Add and manage students[and staff] / View games played.
Some teachers like to use paper-based records, and a few have asked for Excel spreadsheet format records. A set of records for the Alpha to Omega lists , in Excel 2002 format, are available here. These may be used within Excel, or printed out for non-electronic use. We suggest that if you wish to use these, you tailor the columns to your own requirements. The sheets have been used for a single pupil (recording where they are for reading, spelling, understanding of vocabulary, ability to sign/vocalise. They have been used equally successfully for recording progress of groups of children.
Numbershark is best used with adult supervision. Contact us for Excel/Paper based records.
Both for home and school use, we urge that the tutor or parent first helps the child to understand a given topic (where possible with “concrete objects”, i.e real things) and then moves on to the related topic in Numbershark, sitting with the child to ensure that they feel comfortable with the topic and with the chosen games. Only when the child is ready should they be encouraged to work alone consolidating the skills and concepts involved. There are a number of “concrete object” sets of materials that may be of use, including home-made counters, bricks, fir-cones etc. There are also proprietary sets of Maths materials, such as Cuisenaire rods, Dienes Apparatus and Stern Apparatus. We advise that parents interested in such purchases contact their child’s school for further advice.
