Buying Additional CD s for school use

Schools with a single user CD often contact us for advice when considering whether or not to purchase more stand-alone CD s.

This can be a cost-effective way of extending use of our programs in a very small school, or in schools that do not yet have networked computers.

We advise that you contact Sales first, and explain exactly which disk(s) you already have:

Some older releases, and all older versions, are not compatible with our current releases. It is not possible to “mix” both version 3 and version 4 on the same computer. In some cases we can provide further copies of the same release. Otherwise, we can quote for upgrades of older disks.

Some schools place the program student data store (wordshark-shared or numbershark-shared) on the server, so that although they have a single stand-alone CD, it is possible to access a student’s work from any one of several machines, almost like a network version. This is NOT advised if you use more than one CD at a time: File sharing violations are possible, as you are trying to share a single user data file on more than one machine.

Purchasing several more CD s will often be more expensive than buying a network version.

For these reasons, if you have a network it is almost always technically and educationally preferable to trade up from the CD to the school network version rather than buy more copies of the CD.
