Administrators
We suggest that you have at least TWO Administrators. An administrator can make changes that affect the working of the program across the whole school, including:
- Add and delete other administrators, sub-administrators and students
- Change passwords and rename other administrators and sub-administrators.
- Add students “in bulk”, for example at the start of the new school year.
- Change the spelling variations between UK and North American
- Change the font style & size for games, lists and menu items
- Allow a “Hello” to be spoken as the program loads (a useful check that sound/volume are correct)
- Allow or disallow students to use the program who have not been registered to the program within the “Add and manage students and staff” menu item: Such “Temporary Students” do not have their work recorded, cannot create their own word lists, or have work selected for them.
- Enable or disable “Enforce set work”: If enabled, students will have access ONLY to work set for them by staff. If disabled, by clicking on “Other staff”they will be able to access all lists and games.
- Switch on or off the ability for the program to use Active Directory logging-on for students, assuming that students have been registered using their network sign-on ID
- Determine the default course for all new students (e.g. “Letters and Sounds” for an infant school, or “Key Stage 3” for a secondary school, or “Course for older users and adults” for a FE college)
- Exclude “Jigsaw” and “Shredder” games, which are not compatible with some teaching methods
- Carry out technical checks, including fixes for some sound cards and graphics cards, checking memory, integrity of user files, and updating the licence agreement if additional licences are purchased.
Sub-administrators
We suggest that in a school situation, most education staff are signed on as sub-administrators.
Sub-administrators can carry out all the teaching tasks available within the program, but not the administration & network manager tasks listed above.
The sub-administrator menu options are therefore much simpler, giving an easier learning curve for staff
